This week I dedicate my Friday note to the Humane Society of Western Montana as they celebrate their annual “Bone Ball”!
Since the first time I watched the annual holiday special featuring the Land of Misfit Toys, I’ve been a collector of the unusual ... the slightly imperfect, gently used things that need a special home. Staying true to my character, this includes not only furniture and toys, but pets.
My animal collection consisted mostly of cats that came into my life as refugees, strays, or rescue. I had such good luck with this posse that I decided to take it up a notch and add a dog. My first Springer was a true gem ... charming, gentle, mellow and sweet.
When Addie passed, I yearned for another dog and I was pretty sure that all Springers shared her ever so kind disposition. I had just opened my shop and I needed that warm fuzzy “shop dog” feature in my new endeavor. Lucky me ... on the Springer rescue site, there sat Duncan ... waiting. Month after month after month ... he waited. I couldn’t take it any longer!
One day with Duncan and I learned that indeed, all Springers don’t share Addie’s congenial easy going nature. There is nothing subtle about him. He is strong, he’s loud and he doesn’t practice the nice manners he learned in training. He jumps on the furniture, he drags around anything I tie him to and he eats with his mouth open. But just like my furniture he’s a rescue project, and he has made his way into my life, my home and my heart.
What Duncan does have is a great sense of humor and a strong commitment to “give back” to his those less fortunate canines who have not yet found their forever family. When he heard about the Bone Ball, he decided to create and donate a lamp to the auction. I hope that you might go out and support this worthwhile cause ... then ... when you are done ... swing by my shop and buy YOUR companion a piece of rescue furniture to sit on!
Oh ... and if you ever see a Springer dragging a filing cabinet down Reserve. Please return him to me!
